It's back-to-school time! The only problem is the cost is up from last year, about 7.3%! Are you feeling the pain?

The survey found that relative to 2012 the cost of school supplies and extracurricular activities will grow an average of 7.3 percent, outpacing inflation of 1.39 percent.

The Backpack Index found that parents this school year can expect to pay:

• $577 for elementary school students, a 5.3 percent increase from 2012.

• $763 for middle school students, a 5.3 percent increase.

• $1,223 for high school students, a 9.5 percent increase.

Ouch! I've also heard from friends there are always some weird supplies on the list! A few years ago a friend's daughter's list included 'Oil of Olay Facial Wipes' because that is what the teacher used to clean her dry ease board. This year, another friend said they had to get 12 red pens. Really? Why is a kid going to need 12 red pens for the year? If it's for the teacher then multiply that by 30 kids! That's a lot of red correction marks for the year!
