Bald Eagle Watching Tours at Arkansas State Parks

from ArkansasStateParks.com

It’s the time of year again when some of the State Parks in Arkansas host Eagle watching events… and yes, it’s cold on the water.  Eagle watching veterans will tell you to bundle up on the cold mornings… thermal underwear, warm cap, gloves, and a good heavy coat.  Trust us, when you see your first majestic Bald Eagle take flight, you will forget all about the temperature.

Arkansas is a mecca for Bald Eagles in the winter when lakes and streams up north begin to freeze over.  In fact, Arkansas ranks in the top 10 states for wintering Bald Eagles, and some of the best locations to see them are not too far from Texarkana.

Arkansas’ State Parks began their Eagle Awareness programs when the birds were an endangered species. Back in 1963, there were only 417 pairs of Bald Eagles in the United States.  In 1995 they were changed from endangered to threatened, and by 2007 our nation’s symbol had made a huge comeback with almost 11,040 pairs recorded.  That’s when the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service removed Bald Eagles from the threatened list.  Eagles are still protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.
