The start of the New Year is going to be a cold one for all of us here in Texarkana and the surrounding areas, if you haven't taken precautions yet now is the time.

The National Weather Service is calling for a bitterly cold weekend for most of the nation and that includes us in the Texarkana and surrounding area.

Pets, pipes, plants and people, make sure all are protected and warm as you can get them. There are some ideas in the video below.

Here is your official forecast through Wednesday, January 3, 2018, according to the NWS:

Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 26. Calm wind.
Friday: Sunny, with a high near 45. Calm wind becoming south around 5 mph in the morning.
Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 33. South wind around 5 mph.
Saturday: A 20 percent chance of rain. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 43. Northeast wind around 5 mph.
Saturday Night: A chance of rain before midnight, then a chance of freezing rain and sleet. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 28. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
Sunday: A chance of freezing rain and sleet before noon, then a chance of rain. Cloudy, with a high near 33. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
Sunday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 17.
New Year's Day: Mostly sunny, with a high near 30.
Monday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 15.
Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 32.
Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 19.
Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 40.

As cold as it will be here, we're just really glad we don't live in Helena, Montana where the high as I write this is 14, with a 100% chance of snow. Brrrrrr!
