The Bowie County Sheriff's Office has received numerous calls from concerned citizens about an IRS scam. Bowie County citizens are receiving automated phone messages telling them they are being sued by the IRS. According the prerecorded messages, citizens can avoid a law suit by calling a phone number with a 202 area code to pay the taxes they owe. Sheriff James Prince has called one of the given phone numbers from this area code multiple times and each time the person on the other ends hangs up on him. The IRS on their website reminds everyone that they will "never call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill."

Note that the IRS will never:

1) call to demand immediate payment, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill

2) demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe

3) require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card

4) ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone

5) threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying

If you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be with the IRS and demanding you do something that goes against this list, hang up the phone immediately to avoid becoming the victim of a scam.
