Mario’s Weekend Movie Roundup [VIDEO]

Finally, a couple of different type movies in theaters this weekend to choose from. Probably one of the most hyped movies over the past few weeks has been the sci-fi thriller "Pacific Rim" sort of a Transformers meets Terminator type robotic saga. Wonder if this going to be another Hollywood bust?  On the flip side I have been waiting for the release of Grown Ups 2 with all the same cast from the previous movie and a few new faces. This should be a lot of fun to see. So grab the popcorn and I'll see you at the movies!

‘Pacific Rim’ Review

As basically a three-word genre mash-up -- monsters vs. robots -- the announcement that Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures were making 'Pacific Rim' didn't really need to offer much more than just that siren-song simple idea. But it did, promising a big canvas for a big talent, the director Guillermo del Toro. Del Toro isn't a household name -- unless you live in Austin -- but he's the outsized outsider genius behind movies like 'Hellboy' and 'Blade 2' as well as films like 'Pan's Labyrinth' and 'The Devil's Backbone.' And while counting down to 'Pacific Rim,' I had the feeling that while it was nice to have someone spending $200 million to make what my inner 12-year-old would no doubt consider the perfect summer movie, my adult self couldn't help but be suspicious of anyone who'd spend that much money on a pre-teen's idea of the perfect summer movie.

Mario’s Weekend Movie Roundup [VIDEO]

The big summer movie weekend gets an early start for the Fourth of July holiday weekend with a couple of blockbuster movies. First, the reboot of a classic western tale puts Johnny Depp in the saddle as Tonto and introduces actor Armie Hammer as the masked rider out for revenge and justice in The Lone Ranger. Then, those beloved happy-go-lucky minions are back in the animated sequel Despicable 2.  Think I'll see both! Happy 4th!

‘The Lone Ranger’ Review

I loved 'Rango,' the last time Johnny Depp and Gore Verbinski offered up a madcap spin on the Western. I basically enjoyed 'John Carter,' last year's Western-infused would-be space epic, which, not coincidentally, was the last time Walt Disney stock holders had to reach for a shaker of Tums.

However, 'The Lone Ranger,' this new spazzed-out Western from Depp, Verbinski and Disney, takes unusual and unlikely measures to ensure that audiences have a miserable time. There are momentary flashes of amusement, but it is jumbled, tone-deaf and uninteresting. If I wanted to be kind I'd call it dull and ephemeral, but there are long stretches that seem to strive to be annoying - almost anti-entertainment. The only thing 'The Lone Ranger' has going for it is a long life as to go-to description how not to make a blockbusters movie - this generation's 'Last Action Hero.'

‘Despicable Me 2′ Review

I am not a monster. I want to be very clear and upfront about this. Yes, those little squibbling yellow marshmallows called “minions” in 'Despicable Me' and 'Despicable Me 2' are adorable. I don't care how much of a tough guy you think you are, when these little buggers are vrooming about the screen and warbling and wobbling and making exaggerated facial expressions; it is biologically impossible for a human being not to smile. They're wonderful and the design team that creates them (and the scientists who code the array of imaging rendering computers) should all continue to take a bow. With this qualifier out of the way, allow me to warn anyone over the age of 10 or 11 that 'Despicable Me 2' stinks.

The summer movie season is in full swing this weekend with a couple of new movies. If you saw "Olympus Has Fallen" back in March, then you are going to love "White House Down" another drama/action flick that stars Jamie Foxx and Channing Tatum. Also, Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy star in an action/comedy "The Heat" directed by Paul Feig (Bridesmaids). Although I want to see them both "White House Down" is my choice this weekend.

‘White House Down’ Review

'White House Down' has the disadvantage of being the second 'Die Hard'-in-the-White-House movie of 2013 after 'Olympus Has Fallen,' and the advantage of being superior to its predecessor in every conceivable way. It's better directed, better written, and better acted. The action is better, with more impressive special effects; the production design is better, with a much more convincing replica of the White House; the camerawork is better; with clear, lucid images. Where 'Olympus Has Fallen' was grim and stern, 'White House Down' actually embraces the silliness of its premise. It's more exciting and more faithful to the 'Die Hard' formula. This is still basically a shameless ripoff popcorn movie, but it's a shameless ripoff popcorn movie popped to near-perfection.

Mario’s Weekend Movie Roundup [VIDEO]

The first official weekend of summer promises to be a hot weekend at the box office. If you're into monsters and zombies this could be just what the doctor ordered. The first flick stars Brad Pitt trying to save his family in a world taken over by zombies in World War Z, based on a popular novel. Then on the lighter side the monsters are back and are off to Monsters University, this animated tale is certain to entertain all ages. Whatever you choose it should be another blockbuster weekend, enjoy the movies!

Mario’s Weekend Movie Roundup [VIDEO]

Theaters are expecting a super weekend at the box office when the 'Man of Steel' flies into the nearest theater with his super powers. One of the most popular superheroes of all time is expected to shatter box office records this Father's Day weekend. But if you are not into Superman, then a comedy about a bunch of stoners trying to survive the end of the world just might be the ticket. Whatever you choose it's going to be fun! I'm going with 'Man of Steel' for Father's Day! hint hint :)
