As news of Troy Gentry’s death broke on Friday (Sept. 8), fellow country artists were quick to pay tribute to the singer. Among those remembering Gentry were Dan + Shay, who shared a cover of Montgomery Gentry‘s “Something to Be Proud Of” in Gentry’s honor.

Readers can press play above to watch Dan + Shay’s “Something to Be Proud Of” cover, which begins with the two paying their respects to Gentry. “Something to Be Proud Of,” written by Jeffrey Steele, Julian Williams and Chris Wallin, was Montgomery Gentry’s fourth single from their You Do Your Thing album; it hit No. 1 on the charts in October of 2005.

Gentry was killed Friday afternoon in a helicopter crash in Medford, N.J.; he and Montgomery were scheduled to perform there that evening. The helicopter was in distress and was approaching an airport when it crashed; according to 9-1-1 audio, the helicopter was experiencing “mechanical issues” prior to crashing, and went down as emergency crews arrived at the scene.

Country Artists Remember Troy Gentry

“It is with great sadness that we confirm that Troy Gentry, half of the popular country duo, Montgomery Gentry, was tragically killed in a helicopter crash,” a press release from Average Joes Entertainment, Montgomery Gentry’s record label, shared on Friday afternoon. “Details of the crash are unknown. Troy Gentry’s family wishes to acknowledge all of the kind thoughts and prayers, and asks for privacy at this time.”

Gentry was removed from the wreckage at the scene but was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Montgomery was at the airport when the helicopter crashed, along with members of their band, and they were taken to the hospital to see Gentry. In addition to Gentry, the helicopter’s pilot, James Evan Robinson, died in the crash. Crews worked for hours to remove his body from the wreck.

According to Average Joes, Montgomery Gentry had recently completed a new album.
