Eric Church headlined the first show at Nashville’s new Ascend Amphitheater Thursday night (July 30) and brought a very special tune to the stage, inspired by his 3-year-old son, Boone. The touching ballad, called simply “Three-Year-Olds,” is a tribute to the life lessons Church has learned from his little boy's three years of wisdom.

The singer introduced the song by telling a story about going fishing with Boone, when he was attempting to reel the line back in and the boy decided to toss the whole pole into the water. Church tried to retrieve the reel, but Boone had already pushed the tackle box in after it.

“I’m 38 years old and I did not know a fishing pole would sink faster than a tackle box,” Church quipped with a smile.

That and other lessons Boone has taught his father, like the best place to hide keys is in a garbage can, are listed out in funny new song. Some are more sincere, however, and the song is an emotional testament to the truth and wisdom that can be found when seeing life through the eyes of a child.

"You can be a cowboy on the moon / And dig to China with a spoon / Talk to Jesus on the phone / Say 'I love you' all day long / And when you’re wrong, you should just say so / I learned that from a three-year-old,” Church sings, strumming gently on his electric guitar with Nashville’s iconic night skyline in the background.

Church had an additional sold-out show set for July 31 at the same venue. He’s been on The Outsiders tour and playing festivals around the country this summer. His latest single “Like a Wrecking Ball” was released in March and is a Top 10 hit for the artist. The Country Music Hall of Fame is set to display an Eric Church exhibit called Eric Church: Inside the Outsider this fall. It is slated to open Sept. 18.
