Income and the middle class will be the focus when a guest speaker comes to Texas A&M-Texarkana.

Tami Luhby, senior writer for CNNMoney, will speak on “The Growth of Income Inequality in the Middle Class” at 7PM Tuesday, Nov. 3, in Eagle Hall of the University Center.

In addition to the evening program, there will be a meet and greet and luncheon from 12-1PM in University Center 247. Both events are sponsored by the university’s Program for Learning and Community Engagement (PLACE) and are free and open to the public.

Luhby covers income inequality, middle class, healthcare and jobs for CNNMoney. She previously covered personal finance for Newsday and banking for Crain’s New York Business. She also teaches at Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism, from which she graduated in 1997. A lifelong Bronx resident, she is also a triathlete and marathon runner.

PLACE is a faculty-led program designed to create a community of learners comprising A&M-Texarkana students, faculty, staff and the community at large.

“Faculty members annually choose a common theme around which to organize a lecture series and other activities that provide focal points for learning and discussion,” said Dr. Michael Perri, associate professor of history and chair of the PLACE Committee.

PLACE’s goal is to expose its community of learners to a diversity of ideas from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds. This year’s theme is “Economic Opportunity.”

As a learning institution, we think it's vital to provide opportunities to engage our campus and community in issues important to us locally, regionally, nationally and globally,” said Dr. Corrine Hinton, assistant professor of English.
