A fire at the Willows Apartment in Texarkana Arkansas damaged several units but left no one injured. Arkansas side firefighters were called to the apartment complex on East 35th street just after dark.
They were able to contain the damage to several units in one building at the
complex. The investigation into what caused the fire is underway today.

The number of people applying for unemployment benefits
shot up last week after falling the previous few weeks. Applications
typically soar in the 1st two weeks of the year. That’s because
companies are letting go of temporary workers brought in to help during the
holidays.

Retail sales barely rose in December, but the gain was enough to push sales to a record level for 2011. It was the largest annual increase in more than a decade. The Commerce Department says sales edged up 0.1% in December to a seasonally adjusted $400.6 billion . For all of 2011, sales totaled a record $4.7 trillion, a gain of nearly 8%  over 2010,. It was the largest percentage increase since  1999.

Baseball owners meeting in Scottsdale Arizona have added to Commissioner Bud Selig’s Contract which if he stays until the end of the contract he would be over 80 years old. He would also replace Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis as the longest-serving baseball commissioner.
