A longtime resident and dentist in the area will be a part of the University of Arkansas Community College Hope-Texarkana.

The University of Arkansas Board of Trustees recently voted to approve Dr. Robert A. Carter to serve on the U of A Hope-Texarkana Board of Visitors. Dr. Carter was raised in Texarkana and graduated from Arkansas High in 1985. He graduated from the University of Arkansas, and was a member of the SAE fraternity. He then attended dental school at the University of TN-Memphis and graduated with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1996.
Carter has practiced dentistry in Hope for the past 19 years. In 2008, he, along with business partner, Reese Shuffield, started Smiles of Arkansas Dental Center in Hope, Ark. Subsequent clinics in DeQueen, Magnolia, and Texarkana were started to provide dental care to underserved children of Southwest Arkansas.
Carter has been married to his wife, Robyn, for 22 years. They have two children – Lauren, 16, and Will, 11. The family belongs to First Baptist Church-Moores Lane in Texarkana.
Carter is a member of the American Dental Association as well as the Arkansas State Dental Association. He has served on the United Way Board of Hope and CASA Board of Texarkana. He is the past president of the 1st Tee of Greater Texarkana is a current Board member.
Carter has been an active sponsor of UACCH Foundation activities as well as the lead sponsor of the U of A Hope-Texarkana Shooting Sports Team.
