Memorial Day signifies the beginning of the summer season. Americans will take to the road for some vacation time or just to spend the weekend at our area lakes with family and friends. Some will choose to stay at home and do a family cookout. But let's just take a moment and remember those American soldiers who gave their lives so we that can enjoy the freedom we have today.

Let's be clear about Memorial Day and what it represents. Memorial Day is the time to honor those who have died defending our country in the U.S. military. Originally called Decoration Day, it all started in the years following the civil war and was finally officially made into a federal holiday in 1971. Memorial Day is always observed on the last Monday during the month of May.

Many towns throw parades, memorial services and other celebrations to recognize our fallen heroes. In Texarkana, a memorial service will be held on Monday, May 30, 2016 downtown in front of the Korean/Vietnam Memorial wall at 11:30AM. There will be a walk and service to honor, remember and commemorate those who lost their lives fighting for our country.

So this Memorial Day, say a little prayer, fly your American flag, and be proud to be an American. God Bless the USA.
