The Texarkana Texas Police Department is warning area residents about a new phone scam that has it the area in the past few weeks.

Most of the calls appear to target elderly citizesn. A caller advises a person that they have won a cash prize from Publisher's Clearinghouse. However, before any cash can be received, the citizen is told to purchase a "green" card from Wal-Mart worth $500 and give the caller the number on the back of the card.

By the time the unsuspecting elderly person realizes something is wrong, they have lost $500 and there is no Publisher's Clearinghouse prize either. The Police Department would like to advise citizens that if they ever do actually win a cash prize, they will never be asked to supply money up front in order to claim that prize.
