Riley Green made his national television debut on Monday (Jan. 7), performing his debut single "There Was This Girl" live on Today. The infectious track won over Today co-host Hoda Kotb, who dubbed the performance "awesome."

Green's single is currently in the Top 15 on the country charts.

In a short interview ahead of his performance, the Alabama native admitted he hasn't had a chance to stop and soak in his rising success.

"I don't think I really fathom it too much," he admits. "I got to play the Grand Ole Opry for the first time this year so my grandparents think I'm famous now. Playing the Today show, I feel like I'm starting to believe it a little bit. [It's a] pretty big deal."

Green was at ease during his four-minute performance that brought his energetic live show to national viewers. His charm helped win them over, too. The newcomer co-wrote "There Was This Girl" with frequent collaborator Erik Dylan. He previously told Taste of Country Nights that the song isn't about one particular girl.

"I probably had a few in mind, but I mean, I feel like every girl I ever dated thinks every song I ever wrote is about them," he admits. "I just change eye and hair color in there every once in awhile."

"I like writing conversational songs, songs that come from things I might say every day. And often I'd be talking about a girl and how she inspired me to do something to impress her. I think that's a pretty relatable thing," he adds. "A lot of guys have been through the same stuff."
