An area high school alumni group is helping with college scholarships.

The University of Arkansas Community College at Hope is pleased to announce the endowment of a scholarship established by Blevins High School alumni. The idea for this scholarship began during a reunion of the 1954 Class of Blevins Hornets in 2009.  During the class reunion, the Class of ’54 decided to expand outside their high school class to include all Blevins alum to raise funds for a scholarship at UACCH.  This scholarship has been awarded to a student each semester since the fall of 2009 as an annual scholarship, and the Blevins alumni have continued to contribute funds to get it to the minimum endowed level of $10,000. The scholarship is awarded to a student pursuing a degree at UACCH with a preference given to an applicant from Blevins.

Martha Sutton Maple, a member of the Class of 1954, said, “I am pleased to be able to help a student from Blevins further his or her education. I am so thankful that my friend and classmate Adell Campbell, now of Prescott, encouraged me to consider helping organize our classmates and high school alumni to establish this Blevins High School Alumni Endowed Scholarship.  We have had a great response from our classmates and other Blevins Alumni.  I am so thankful that support for this scholarship has continued, allowing us to raise enough funds to endow this scholarship. As an endowed scholarship it will continue to be awarded to a student from this community that we love and cherish as a part of our childhood.”

Since June of 2009, the Blevins High Alumni have worked to grow the scholarship balance, through additional donations, from a starting balance of $2,000 to a current balance of over $10,000.  UACCH is grateful for the support it receives from communities like Blevins, helping an expanding number of students from these communities to realize that an affordable quality education can be received at UACCH.

Chris Thomason, Chancellor at UACCH commented, “This act of generosity by the Blevins High School Alumni is the perfect reflection of the value that all of Arkansas receives from our rural school districts.  Communities like Blevins have been providing our children with wonderful educations for years.  Now those same children are adults who are continuing the commitment they were taught at Blevins High to help those who follow them to achieve their educational dreams at UACCH.”
