Texas A&M-Texarkana to Host Poetry Workshop and Reading

The Program for Learning and Community Engagement (PLACE) at Texas A&M University-Texarkana will host a poetry workshop and reading. The event will be held with award-winning poet and editor Megan Sexton April 18-19 in the University Center on the A&M-Texarkana campus.

On Monday, April 18, Sexton will conduct a poetry workshop from 4:30-6:30PM in the TEXAR Room, University Center 116. The goal of the workshop is for everyone to have a poem or a poem-in-progress to take home with them. All levels of writing experience are welcome. Attendees are encouraged to bring a notebook and pen or pencil.

On Tuesday, April 19, Sexton will read from her first collection of poems, Swift Hour, and other notable works at 6PM in the fourth floor atrium of the University Center. Published by Mercer University Press in April 2014, Swift Hour won the Adrienne Bond Award for Poetry. Sexton’s chapbook, Insects and Mystics, was awarded the Redbone Press Prize.

Sexton was born in New York and grew up on the Florida Gulf coast. Her poetry and nonfiction have been widely published in anthologies and journals, including Poetry, Ploughshares, The Iowa Review, The Southern Review, The Literary Review, Poetry Daily and elsewhere. She has been nominated for the PEN/Newman First Amendment Award and has received a fellowship from the Hambidge Center for Creative Arts and Sciences.

Sexton is coeditor of Five Points: A Journal of Literature and Art and teaches in the English department at Georgia State University.

PLACE is a faculty-led program designed to create a community of learners comprising A&M-Texarkana students, faculty, staff and the community at large.

“Faculty members annually choose a common theme around which to organize a lecture series and other activities that provide focal points for learning and discussion,” said Dr. Michael Perri, associate professor of History and chair of the PLACE Committee.

PLACE’s goal is to expose its community of learners to a diversity of ideas from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds.

The events are free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Those who would like to attend the workshop are asked to register with Dr. Davis, professor of English, at Doris.Davis@tamut.edu.
