Texas High School Commercial Photography students recently traveled to Austin, Texas to attend the Association of Texas Photography Instructors Winter Conference.

During the event, students had the opportunity to participate in workshops, seminars and to participate in on-site competitions.

Earning “Best of Show” Awards were:

  • Picture Package: Lauren Maynard
  • Portfolio Review–Beginning Student: Lauren Maynard
  • School Portfolio: Team of Rachel Lewis, Emily Meinzer, Kayleigh Moreland and Sara Vaughn.

Additional Top Awards earned were:

Big 72 Short Film: Sara Vaughn & Madeline Parish–2nd Place.

Digital Editing–Onsite Contest: Brianna O’Shaugnessy-2nd Place

Digital Image–Onsite Contest: Lauren Maynard–1st Place for Space Them and Old Theme.

Portfolio Reviews–Advanced Art and Cropped–Onsite Elimination Tournament: Rachel Lewis–3rd Place.

Portfolio Reviews–Advanced Journalism: Sara Vaughn–1st Place; Misty Morris–Honorable Mention.

Portfolio Reviews–Beginning Student: Kayleigh Moreland–1st Place; Emily Meinzer–3rd Place.

The THS Commercial Photography program, led by instructor Clint Smith, not only teaches students how to create photography, but exposes them to multiple career paths through the photographic arts. Students enrolled in the program receive more training in photojournalism, portraiture, digital imaging and commercial photography. They learn the basics of photography, commercial composition, print making and finishing.

Students get hands-on experience by photographing all school related and district events for use in school and district publications and meet the challenges of real-world environment by producing a photographic product that is marketable to commercial and media outlets.

ATPI provides information and resources to teachers and students who work with photography in order to help the photography instructors of all disciplines work to achieve a higher quality of knowledge and teaching of photography.
