The Great Texas Balloon Race in East Texas This Weekend July 23-26
Do you enjoy hot air balloons? I remember several years ago in Texarkana I had the opportunity to ride in one and it's an experience I will never forget. I remember flying directly over the radio station on the way to our landing spot in a field just off Hwy 71 North. The shear beauty of these magnificent hot air balloons is hard to describe and if you ever get the chance to ride in one, do it. In fact, don't miss The Great Texas Balloon Race going on now through this Sunday, July 26, in Longview, Texas. This is a world class event, attracting the very best competitive pilots from all across the the world. The Great Texas Balloon Race has earned Longview the official designation as "The Balloon Capital of Texas" by the Governor of Texas in 1985. Additionally, in 2013, Gregg County was proclaimed "The Balloon Race Capital of Texas" by the 83rd Texas Legislature.
Balloon flights were cancelled today (7/23) because of wind conditions but will resume tomorrow, weather permitting. Launch and landing sites change daily depending on weather conditions, too.
One of the most exiting parts of this event is the balloon glows that will take place on Friday and Saturday nights. These glows are one of the most popular events for the general public to see with their awesome display of color and excitement; people of all ages will most certainly enjoy.
You will also get a personal view of how these balloons are inflated and get to see how they operate, so bring your camera! On Friday, kids are going to love seeing the special shaped balloons.
The kids will want to take in "Kids Land," a safe restricted area for children that requires a small separate entry fee. Bounce houses, rock climbing wall, bungee run, and joust are just a few of the attractions available at The Great Texas Balloon Race.. Make sure to check out the arts and crafts and other merchandise for sale on the specially designed midway. Food and drinks will also be available for purchase.
