If you're not familiar with the term, a "helicopter mom" is one of those moms who "hovers" over their kids constantly controlling their every move.

Helicopter parents are so named because, like helicopters, they hover closely overhead, rarely out of reach, whether their children need them or not.

According to Wickipedia, the term was coined back in the 90's, but I had never heard it until this morning. A new study says that 17% of American moms consider themselves a "helicopter mom".  Which, I'm kind of relieved the number is that low.
