Valentine's Day is right around the corner and some folks think Valentine's is overrated that it's nothing more than a commercial holiday so stores can make money. Could be true somewhat, but fellas don't let your woman know you feel that way about it.

First of all, I don't claim to be an expert in the field of love but in talking with some of my buddies over the years, listening to women, and learning from experience, I thought I would share a few helpful tips on making her Valentine's Day really special.

You see, most guys tend to just go in a store and if it looks good they'll buy it, thinking "she'll love it." But that's not necessarily the case because a little thought and planning can go a long way in determining if Valentine's Day is a bust or a win.

Most guys don't have a clue when it comes to buying flowers or choosing the right colors. I'm not saying you have to go to a florist for help but it certainly doesn't hurt. If you decide to go the florist way, ask the florist for suggestions and decide how much you can spend, chances are they may be able to put a really nice bouquet together for you with a special touch. Also, see if they have any chocolates for sale. Most florists sell more than just flowers these days -- especially around Valentine's Day -- and can offer up something delightful, decadent, and delectable for your sweetheart's sweet tooth.

One of the biggest mistakes a guy will make is waiting until the last minute and running into a store and grabbing some flowers. That's fine, but let's just hope she never figures out she was a last-minute thought.

Many guys seem to think that roses are the way to go, but did you know there are other flowers out there that are just as impressive? Orchids and roses mixed together are beautiful. Dare to be different could score you some major points and could be the difference in spending the night in a bed or a doghouse.

And whatever you do try to avoid giving your woman flowers wrapped in plastic especially on Valentine's Day. Any other day is fine just not on V' Day! Go ahead and splurge and spend a little more, buy a vase to put them in. Women love bragging and showing off their flowers to their co-workers from their man.

Of course,if you don't have a significant other, none of what I just said matters.

Happy Valentine's Day!
