Massive Police Presence Crystal Beach Jeep Weekend
In a video out of Galveston, a local Crystal Beach business owner can be heard counting as multiple black and white late model DPS Chevrolet Tahoes board a ferry to Crystal Beach.
He stopped counting at the number 35 as they streamed one at a time onto the ferry. They are a visual representation of the force that people not following the new Galveston County Sheriff Jimmy Fullen's rules for the beach this year will be up against.
He was a member of the Texas City Police Department and recently served as the Galveston Independent School District's Chief of Police. That means he has a good idea of what young Jeep Weekend attendees like to get up to.
Jeep Weekend Clamp Down Has Begun In Texas
All signs point to a much more orderly celebration at Jeep Weekend at Crystal Beach. This year, it should look like more of a parade and less of a rolling party.
According to KHOU, this year's event on the Bolivar Peninsula has been in the planning stages for over five months. Area business owners are welcoming the change and all of the efforts to keep beachgoers safe.
“It’s been extremely dangerous, they’ve had homicides, kidnappings, sexual assaults, and just 300 arrests last year,” Fullen said.
Many people are not happy about the plans, and say that they violate their rights to come to the beach. Facts are these plans have been approved by GLO and TxDOT and will be enforced. Sheriff Fullen says this to those attending Jeep Weekend:
”You come down to our beaches, we will welcome you with open arms, come down and behave yourself. Do the right thing, follow our rules and our laws, and everything is going to be good. If you choose not to do that, I assure you that we will put you in our county jail,” he said.
