Jon Pardi Rocks California Country at George Dickel Porch Sessions
Jon Pardi brought his California country to Tullahoma, Tenn., on Saturday (Aug. 12) when he headlined the third installment of the George Dickel Porch Sessions. The summer-long music series, which launched in May, takes place about 90 minutes southeast of Nashville at the George Dickel Distillery grounds.
The backyard, under-a-tent setting provided an intimate experience for Pardi fans, who lined up hundreds of lawn chairs for the sold-out show. Former The Voice contestant Hailey Steele also performed on the porch near the George Dickel General Store before Pardi took the main stage.
Opening with his feel-good rocker "Paycheck," Pardi set the tone for the night, providing a mix of singalong fist pumpers and old-school-inspired country ballads. One of those ballads, "She Ain't in It, was a highlight, of the night as Pardi shared some inside info with the crowd.
“We’re gonna pick a little song from (Pardi's 2016 album) California Sunrise,” Pardi said from stage. “This song became available because George Strait took it off hold and I thought well damn, I’m gonna pick up the phone if George doesn’t want it. Now it’s being played on (Sirius XM’s) the Highway. It’s pretty dangerous ’cause it’s so country but I’m glad the Highway picked it up. … This one’s called ‘She Ain’t in It.’”
The song must've inspired Pardi to stay old-school for a few more songs, because he went rogue from the setlist to play back-to-back covers of Alan Jackson's "Livin’ on Love" and Mark Chesnutt's "It's a Little Too Late" before citing that today's country bands cover pop star Bruno Mars but "nobody" covers Jackson or Chesnutt anymore.
"I don't get it," Pardi said with a laugh, alluding to how much country music has evolved.
The rest of the set unsurprisingly revolved around his 2014 Write You a Song and 2016 California Sunrise albums, featuring crowd favorites such as "Night Shift" to the gold certified "Up All Night." Also, perhaps as a test to see how many times he could get the crowd to sing the word "boots" in seven minutes, Pardi closed the 90-minute set with his back-to-back No. 1 California Sunrise hits "Head Over Boots" and "Dirt on My Boots." Fans definitely knew the words to the radio-friendly hits and sang along – many with Dickel drinks in hand – until the set ended.
The final George Dickel Porch Session of the season will be in October, again at the George Dickel Distillery Grounds. The performer and specific date has yet to be announced, but fans can find ongoing updates and purchase tickets via dickelporchsessions.com. Past performers include Pardi, Frankie Ballard and Maddie & Tae.
