The U.S. Department of Education named Redwater Junior High School a nominee as a National Blue Ribbon School for 2020, joining 25 other Texas campuses out of a total of over 9,000 Texas schools.

According to a recent release, the Texas Education Agency made the nomination to the United States Department of Education based on exemplary progress toward closing achievement gaps among student subgroups.

“We are honored to be named a National Blue Ribbon School nominee and we are proud of our staff, students, community, and the leadership of their principal, Mrs. Kim Cody,” said Dr. Kelly Burns, Superintendent of Redwater ISD.“Our mission is to focus on ‘Every Student, Every Day’ at Redwater ISD and our staff does just that.”

“This nomination represents the hard work and dedication of the staff at Redwater Junior High who are impassioned about teaching and learning,” said Mrs. Kim Cody, Junior High Principal. “Our teachers and students form caring relationships that underscore the students’ desire to go beyond already high expectations.”

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle, and high schools where students achieve very high learning standards or are making notable improvements in closing the achievement gap. The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program was established in 1982 and has presented more than 9,000 schools across the country this coveted award. Up to 420 schools may be nominated each year. The US Department of Education will announce award winners in the Fall semester of 2020.

“We have the privilege to serve a community where parents, administration, central office, and the board of trustees support the work we do with the resources we need to meet the needs of all students,” expressed Mrs. Cody. Matt Knight, Board of Trustees President conveyed, “The RISD Board is honored and extremely excited about our JR High being recognized as a Blue Ribbon School. However, we are not surprised by this honor. It actually validates what we already knew to be true. Dr. Burns's leadership with staff and high standards for education continues to put our students in the best position to succeed. We would like to congratulate and thank Mrs. Cody and her entire JR Staff on this great commendation. We are so thankful for each of them and all the hard work they have done and continue to do to fulfill our vision.
