Changes are coming to Arkansas driver's licenses or identification cards beginning January 1, 2026.

A new House Bill 1315 has been signed into law, adding blood types to be placed on a driver's license or ID card.

According to a report from KNWA, the new law states that a person, parent, or guardian of a person, may apply to the Office of Driver Services to have a blood type designated on a driver's license or ID card stating the blood type of the individual.

Here's what the actual text from the bill reads:

"An Act to authorize a blood type designation to be placed on a driver's license or Identification card, and for other purposes."

The purpose of the new bill is to help in case of an emergency and allow for clarification of the exact blood type of a person, especially for emergency personnel at a hospital. This will allow emergencies at a hospital to speed up the process when trying to identify a person's blood type. This will also help with the local blood supply available because typically they have more O-type blood in hospitals.

This new bill is all about saving lives, it's a win-win situation for Arkansans living in Arkansas. I think even the family dog would agree.
