Be on the Lookout for Self-Driving Trucks on Texas Highways
Tyson Foods one of the world's leading poultry and protein businesses is partnering up with Kodiak Robotics Inc., and C. R. England Trucking by shipping deliveries via self-driving trucks.
I know this sounds like something you would see in a futuristic movie but self-driving trucks are fast becoming the future now. And you're probably thinking what could possibly go wrong? I mean can you imagine driving down the interstate and you look over at a truck and there is no driver behind the wheel?
The three companies launched the pilot program in April and are now shipping Tyson products via their autonomous trucks on interstate highways between Dallas and San Antonio. The Kodiak Robotic trucks will be pulling a C. R. England refrigerated trailer and safety drivers will ride along for the first phase of the program.
How it Works
Their fleet of autonomous trucks is highly trained to be safer than a human, which allows them to be more reliable and take care of the long-haul miles between transfer points, known as TruckPorts. Transfer points then facilitate exchanges from human-driven trucks to long-haul self-driving trucks via a company network.
With a shortage of drivers across the nation, Kodiak believes that their self-driving trucks will be safe and reliable. Company officials with Tyson are hoping this new modern technology will not only be a benefit but will enable transporting its products on time to their destination according to the Shelby Report.
