Students at a couple of Texarkana school districts will begin their summer vacation a little earlier than expected.

Both the Liberty-Eylau and Pleasant Grove Independent School Districts have revised their school calendars and will be holding the last day of instruction on Thursday, May 26.

The original calendars for both districts, had students attending through the first week in June following Memorial Day. However, a change in state law passed by the Texas Legislature allows for the revision. House Bill 2610 mandates the traditional school day is measured in minutes, with at least 75,600 minutes required for students annually. This replaces the old 180 days of  instruction requirement.

The Texarkana, Texas Independent School District chose not to change its school instructional calendar for the 2015-2016 school year. Its last day of instruction is scheduled for Friday, June 3. However, T.I.S.D. is making the switch for the 2016-2017 school year to a last week of May finish.

The Texarkana, Ark., School District's last day of instruction remains the same, Thursday May 26.

So for at least some Texarkana school kids, summer vacation break now starts earlier --before the Memorial Day Holiday!
