A man drove from Long Island, New York, into Lower Manhattan earlier today in a van he thought was filled with explosives. He parked the van close to the Federal Reserve building, just a few blocks from the World Trade Center, and planned to detonate it using a cell phone from a nearby hotel.
The explosives, however, were fake.
Archaeologists at the World Trade Center site have discovered a nearly 400 year old ship buried underneath the WTC complex. The ship was most likely deemed un-seaworthy and sunk intentionally in the early American colonists efforts to "build up" the islands shore line. Almost the entire WTC complex was once under the Hudson River.
One of the most famous buildings in the U.S. had its official opening this week (May 1) in 1931 -- the Empire State Building in New York City. The building was constructed in just 14 months.
