A book is a powerful thing. In fact, sometimes reading the right book can be a life altering experience. That's exactly what happened when five-year-old Toby Little of Sheffield, England brought home a book from school entitled “A Letter to New Zealand” which documents a letter's travels.
Most parents and teachers realize that readers are taught rather than born. It isn’t often that you’ll see a child pick up a book on his own when there are so many other activities that he could be doing. That’s why the faculty at Nash Elementary is doing something to change the way students view books.
It may seem that our modern culture doesn't really encourage children to read much these days. With all the cartoons, video games and social media sites available today, it is no wonder that our young people are easily distracted. That's one of the reasons I'm so delighted when I see parents who work hard to engage their children and teach them the power of literacy.
