Look: New Texas Driver License/ID Design with Better Security

Texans receiving a new driver's license or state ID card will notice a fresh design starting today, August 18. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has launched a redesigned card format that officials say will strengthen identity protection and make counterfeiting more difficult.

Current Texas Licenses/IDs Still Valid:

Your current licenses and IDs will remain valid until their expiration dates, but all newly issued cards will follow the updated design.

Fake ID's Just Got A Lot Harder In Texas:

According to DPS, the new cards are made from a tamper-resistant polycarbonate material, which is a more durable option that complies with national standards set by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators. Officials say the material, along with other built-in security measures, makes the cards far more resistant to forgery.

The REAL ID Gold Star Changes:

One of the most noticeable changes is the black, laser-engraved star in the upper right-hand corner. This feature indicates compliance with federal REAL ID requirements, replacing the gold star previously used.

The redesigned cards also present personal information in a cleaner layout, making them easier to read and verify.

Protecting Texans from Identity Theft:

DPS Driver License Division Chief Sheri Gipson said the upgrades are part of the state’s ongoing effort to protect Texans.

“This new card design will make it even more difficult for criminals to produce counterfeit cards, and it enhances ways we can protect Texans’ identities from being stolen,” Gipson noted.

Officials encourage Texans not to replace their current cards early; existing licenses and IDs remain fully valid until renewal.
