Three Honored as 2025 Arkansas State Troopers of the Year
Three Arkansas State Police (ASP) Troopers have been honored with the 2025 Arkansas State Trooper of the Year Award for their bravery during a high-risk pursuit and armed standoff in Jackson County.
- Recipients: Corporals Dustin Carpenter, Christopher Barnett, and Marcus Simpson
- Awarded at: Arkansas Police Awards ceremony, Benton Event Center
- Presented by: Arkansas State Police Foundation
The award highlights their quick thinking, teamwork, and commitment to public safety during a dangerous incident that unfolded on October 11, 2024.
High-Speed Pursuit & Armed Standoff
The three Troopers were involved in a pursuit on U.S. Highway 67 after a man began driving aggressively toward a marked ASP vehicle.
- Suspect: Isaiah Cross, 50, of Blossom, Texas
- Speed: Topped 120 mph northbound between Newport and Bradford
- Initial Outcome: Troopers were able to stop Cross, leading to a tense standoff
Crisis negotiators attempted to peacefully resolve the situation. However, Cross refused to exit his vehicle and threatened officers, claiming to be armed. After about 30 minutes, the standoff escalated when Cross fled the scene again.
- New Threat: Cross drove south in the northbound lane, into oncoming traffic!
- Speed: Over 100 mph for approximately 10 miles.
- Trooper Response: Once a gap in traffic appeared, troopers were forced to use deadly force.
- End of Pursuit: The suspect’s vehicle ran off the highway into a ditch and caught fire.
Two Troopers were injured during the incident but are expected to fully recover. Their ability to act swiftly under extreme pressure likely saved lives that day.
Colonel Mike Hagar praised their bravery:
“We get to recognize publicly what we already know privately—that our Troopers serve with honor and integrity. We are grateful for your sacrifice and service.”
Additional Honors at the Ceremony
Attorney General Tim Griffin delivered the keynote address, telling Troopers,
“If you’re not safe, you’re not free. I know you serve from a deep sense of duty.”
