Watch C-130 Cargo Plane Land on Highway in Arkansas
It's not every day you see a cargo land in the middle of an Arkansas highway unless it's some kind of emergency. One of the military's largest planes the C-130 H Hercules Cargo aircraft landed on Highway 63 in the small town of Bono just Northeast of Jonesboro over the weekend.
Operation Emerald Warrior
According to THV11, Airlift Wing 189 landed in the cargo plane as part of an Air Force training exercise Operation Emerald Warrior.
After working with the Arkansas Department of Transportation and coordinating with the Arkansas State Police, the Craighead County Sheriff’s Office, and the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office the U.S. Air Force along with the Arkansas National Guard were able to perform this landing on a huge 5-lane stretch of Highway 63 that was partially closed and turned into a landing strip allowing the cargo plane plenty of space to land.
The Purpose
The purpose of the training exercises is to make sure the pilots are capable of landing in case of a National emergency or natural disaster. The environment to land the C-130 may not always be ideal but the training helps the pilot better understand what is necessary to get the plane on the ground safely. It's one thing to land one of these massive planes in simulation but landing it realistically is a whole new cup of tea.
Here's what it looked like as the C-130 was landing.
