A mixed bag of winter weather is predicted for the Texarkana area late Sunday night into Monday, snow is now expected with up to 5 inches in some areas. The cold air mass that will be associated with this Artic blast will drop temperatures way below freezing until Wednesday.

Driving under these conditions is not advised but if you have to get out for any reason, here are some great weather tips on how to drive in the snow and ice from Car and Driver. You'll be surprised just how many people still drive like maniacs in this type of weather putting their life and others in danger.

First of all, Slow your speed and allow plenty of distance to stop. When driving in snow and ice keep a distance of at least three vehicles between you and the car in front of you.

When you have to come to a stop brake gently to avoid skidding or sliding and if your wheels start to lock up on you, ease up on the brake.

Most newer cars have running lights or headlights that stay on but if you have an older car turn on your headlights to become more visible to other motorists.

Use low gears to keep traction, especially on hills and elevated roads, and don't use cruise control or overdrive on icy roadways.

Keep your windshield and lights clear. Don't assume your vehicle can handle all weather conditions, even if you have 4-wheel drive you can still encounter trouble on icy roads.

Be extra cautious on overpasses and bridges as they freeze first and are more prone to have ice on them. The Arkansas and Texas Departments of Transportation are pretty good about treating the bridges and overpasses but you still have to be careful. Shaded areas are just as dangerous so be cautious.

Drivers should always be prepared in case they get stuck, wear plenty of warm clothing, and bring extra coats, blankets, and an emergency road kit just in case.

The bottom line is this if you don't have to get out, DON'T.
