A 4th of July weekend at a lake in East Texas turned tragic for a man on Saturday when he dove head first from a 40-foot cliff embankment into the water that was only 4 feet deep.

The 34-year-old man was unresponsive at Lake Gladewater when police and emergency personnel arrived shortly after 4:00 p.m. Lifesaving measures were implemented for several minutes before the man was pronounced dead, according to KLTV.

The area where the man dove from is a popular place where folks go swimming because of its tall embankments, however, the water there is shallow with a rocky bottom. Gladewater police indicated there were several witnesses who saw the man dive into the water and immediately were able to get to him and pull him out. First responders on the scene worked on reviving the man but they were unable to resuscitate him.

Lake Gladewater is 30 feet deep at its maximum depth, according to Texas Parks and Wildlife.
