Before ‘American Idol,’ Kree Harrison and Rosie O’Donnell Were Best Buds

Video of Kree Harrison‘s many trips to ‘The Rosie O’Donnell Show’ has surfaced, along with a glimpse of the Christmas album the current ‘American Idol‘ contestant recorded on Lyric Street Records. Harrison sang a duet with O’Donnell on ‘No Wrapping Required,’ and the two shared it with viewers over a decade ago.

The above video shows one of Harrison’s later trips to the show. She first appeared a few years earlier during the talk show host’s ‘Most Talented Kids’ episode. The Texas-born singer performed Martina McBride‘s ‘Broken Wing’ (video below) to the delight of the audience and O’Donnell. She says her good friend Tommy Mottola was watching, and should be calling.

It’s not clear if the Sony Music executive actually called, but during a second appearance on ‘The Rosie O’Donnell Show,’ Harrison revealed that (now-defunct) Lyric Street Records called and she signed a record deal and was planning a move to Nashville. One year later her father would die in a plane crash however, and the deal with Lyric Street wouldn’t produce any further material.

Harrison charmed Rosie with her “yes ma’ams” and polite conversation. She told the host so sweetly that her voice is a “God-given talent,” and revealed she’d never had vocal lessons. “I hope to be the youngest country music singer and it’d be such an honor to sing at the Grand Ole Opry,” Harrison said before learning O’Donnell had given her family a trip to Nashville to watch the show.

Twelve years later, the young star stands poised to become the third country singer to win ‘American Idol.’ This week she faces off in the Final 3 episode, with the ultimate champion being crowned next week.
