A man was arrested this afternoon, May 21, 2015, following a bomb scare at a local grocery store.

Texarkana, Texas Police Officers were called to the Walmart Neighborhood Market in the 3500 block of Richmond road at approximately 2:20 p.m. Bruce Dale Overton, 36, reportedly entered the store and the theft deterrent system activated as he passed through the door. Police say he then laid his backpack on the floor and told nearby employees that there was a bomb in it. He was immediately detained by an off-duty Cass County Constable.

After Texarkana police and fire personnel arrived, Walmart made the decision to evacuate the store as a precautionary measure. Overton told officers that there was no bomb and that he was only joking when he made the statement to the employees.

Officers were quickly able to confirm that the backpack did not contain any type of explosive device, and the area was declared to be safe.

Overton was arrested and charged with Terroristic Threats. He is being held in the Bi-State Justice Center jail awaiting bond.
