Texans recently received some good news regarding fireworks. Thanks to some new legislation that just passed, it will now allow people to purchase fireworks for three occasions other than just the 4th of July and New Year's Eve.

Texas Independence Day celebrates the adoption of the state’s independence declaration. It is an annual, legal holiday in Texas and in the United States held on March 2. Texas Independence Day celebrations are held in many cities and towns throughout the state. The day is celebrated by festivals that include children’s activities, re-enactments, music, and chili cook-offs. Other activities include story-telling sessions about how Texas won its independence from Mexico and became a Republic during the 19th Century.

Some state government workers may choose to have a day off on Texas Independence Day as it is a partial staffing day. Many schools have classroom lessons and activities about the Texas Declaration of Independence during this time of the year.

Texas Independence Day commemorates the adoption of the Texas Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836. Sixty delegates from all over Texas signed the declaration. Its language in many ways parallels the 1776 Declaration of Independence of the United States, which is observed on Independence Day, also known as the "Fourth of July."

The other two days that you will be able to purchase fireworks in Texas will be for San Jacinto Day, April 21, and our traditional Memorial Day holiday on May 30. San Jacinto Day is in celebration of the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836. It was the final battle of the Texas Revolution where Texas won its Independence from Mexico.

Below are the days and dates that fireworks will be available for purchase. Remember, however, this is for Texas-side residents only. Shooting fireworks on the Arkansas side of Texarkana on these dates is illegal. No fireworks will be sold in Arkansas on these dates.

  • Texas Independence Day March 2 (Fireworks sold Feb. 25-March 2)
  • San Jacinto Day April 21 (Fireworks sold April 16-April 21)
  • Memorial Day May 30 (Fireworks sold May 25-30)
