The Bureau of Land Management is holding a wild horse and burro event in Texarkana at the Four State Fairgrounds on Friday, July 16, and Saturday, July 17.

Normally this event is held in Idabel each year but Texarkana should be thrilled to have the opportunity to host this event. There will be approximately 65 wild horses and burros available for adoption. Adoptions will begin at 9 AM - 5 PM on Friday and 8 AM - 4 PM Saturday. Appointments are encouraged and walkups will be accepted. Please call 414-339-4450 to make your appointment now.

One of the efforts of the Bureau of Land Management is to find every horse and burro a great home, The BLM offers $1,000 to adopt an untrained wild horse or burro with their Adoption Incentive Program. There is a $25 adoption sale fee for untrained animals.

Please come prepared to follow recommended guidelines from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The animals offered at the event are adult and yearling horses and burros that once roamed free on public lands in the West. The BLM periodically removes excess animals from the range in order to maintain healthy herds and to protect other rangeland resources.

Adoption Qualifications

BLM staff will approve applications onsite. To qualify to adopt, one must be at least 18 years old, with no record of animal abuse. Qualified homes must have a minimum of 400 square feet of corral space per animal, with access to food, water, and shelter. A six-foot corral fence is required for adult horses; five feet for yearlings; and four-and-a-half feet for burros. All animals must be loaded in covered, stock-type trailers with swing gates and sturdy walls and floors. BLM staff will be on hand to assist with the short application process.

So, if you ever wanted to own a horse or burro now is the time to adopt one and give these horses a good home.
