Arkansas Governor Proposes Grocery Tax Cut, Food Donation Protections
Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has announced two new legislative proposals aimed at easing food insecurity and reducing grocery costs for Arkansas families.
Grocery Tax Reliief Act
The Grocery Tax Relief Act would eliminate the state's remaining 125% tax on groceries by January 1, 2026. The Governor said the move would put more money back in Arkansans' pockets and make food more affordable.
Good Neighbor Act
The second proposal on the list is called the Good Neighbor Act. This act seeks to encourage food donations by strengthening legal protections for businesses, restaurants, farmers, and churches providing excess food to the needy. Sanders said this measure would help combat Arkansas's high food insecurity rate, which is the worst in the nation.
Speaking on the initiatives, Governor Sanders emphasized the importance of making it easier for families to buy food and for businesses to donate without fear of liability. The timing of the proposals comes during rising food costs and a growing trend among states to remove grocery taxes to help ease the financial strain on residents.
If the two proposals pass during the current Arkansas legislative session, it would mark another big step in Governor Sanders broader efforts to provide economic relief and support struggling Arkansans.
