Texarkana Food Safety Alert: Chicken Empanadas Misbranded

Texarkana-area residents are urged to check their freezers for mislabeled frozen products that may pose health risks to those with milk allergies. This came out earlier today, January 9, 2025, from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). FSIS issued a public health alert for certain batches of Chicken Curry Empanadas which were misbranding and included an undeclared allergen.

The alert is for 9.6-ounce packages labeled as "Bettergoods TRADITIONALLY CRAFTED Chicken Curry Empanadas" with best-by dates of May 21, 2026, or May 22, 2026, and establishment number “P33967” printed on the side of the box. Some packages may mistakenly contain Apple Cinnamon Empanadas, which include milk—an allergen not listed on the packaging.

The products were distributed to Walmart stores nationwide, including our stores here in the Texarkana area. Residents who already have these in their freezer should be aware of this recall.

The issue was discovered after the producing establishment received consumer complaints about the mix-up. There have been no confirmed reports of allergic reactions, but FSIS advises consumers to discard or return the product if it is in their possession.
