Beginning April 1, Texans who receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits will no longer be able to purchase candy or sweetened beverages using their Lone Star Cards.

The change was announced by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission and applies to SNAP recipients across the state.

New SNAP Purchase Restrictions

Under the new policy, SNAP benefits cannot be used to buy:

  • Candy or gum
  • Sweetened drinks containing 5 grams or more of added sugar
  • Beverages with any amount of artificial sweetener
  • Candied or coated foods such as raisins or nuts covered in chocolate, yogurt, caramel, or glaze

Officials say the change is intended to encourage healthier food choices among families receiving food assistance.
