A New Boston man is dead after deputies and other law enforcement officers responded to a reported stabbing and assault Saturday morning.

According to the Bowie County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called around 9:33 AM Saturday, August 8, to County Road 3103 near U.S. Highway 82 in New Boston.

Investigators say a woman who had been severely injured in the attack ran to a nearby home, with the suspect following her.

The homeowner reportedly armed himself and intervened, holding the suspect at gunpoint until law enforcement arrived.

The suspect was identified as 48-year-old Kenneth Eugene Jordan of New Boston.

Officers Tried Less-Lethal Options

Deputies from the Bowie County Sheriff's Office, along with officers from the New Boston Police Department, Hooks Police Department and the Texas Department of Public Safety, responded to the scene.

According to the Sheriff's Office, Jordan was still armed with a knife when officers confronted him.

Deputies used Tasers twice, but Jordan did not comply. Officers also used an OC pepper-ball gun, but that was also unsuccessful.

Authorities said Jordan then turned toward a New Boston Police K9 and its handler, prompting officers to use deadly force.

A Hooks police officer shot Jordan. Life-saving efforts were unsuccessful, and Jordan died at the scene.

Stabbing Victim Expected to Survive

One of the women was seriously injured and was flown by helicopter for medical treatment. The Sheriff's Office said her condition has since improved and she is expected to survive the attack.

The Sheriff's Office is investigating the aggravated assaults that led to the law enforcement response. A motive for the attacks has not been determined.

Investigating the Officer-Involved Shooting Taken Up By Rangers

The Texas Department of Public Safety Ranger Division is investigating the officer-involved shooting.

Justice of the Peace Catie Hawkins ordered an autopsy, and Jordan's body was transported to the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas.

The Sheriff's Office credited the homeowner who intervened, saying his actions likely prevented the situation from becoming even more serious. The agency also thanked the responding law enforcement agencies for their assistance.
