A proposal to require Arkansas voters to show photo identification at the polls before casting a ballot has been rejected by a stae Senate Committee. The Senate State Agencies and Governmental Affairs Committee today rejected the plan that would have allowed a voter without an identification to cast a provisional ballot. That person would have had to present an ID to election officials later for the vote to be counted.

The supporters of the bill believe the requirement would protect the integrity of the state's voting system, and compated it to laws requiring such ID to sell crap metal or buy certain types of cold medicine. Currently staff at Arkansas voting precincts presently can ask for photo identification, but the voter is not obligated to provide it.
