Learn More About the Texarkana Animal Spay & Neuter Grant Program
We all know that the dog and cat population in our area is out of control the good thing is the city is getting some help. Texarkana, Texas Animal Services received a $14,128 grant in July 2023 from the Texas Department of State Health Services' Animal Friendly Grant program. This two-year grant helps Texas residents and local groups provide affordable spay and neuter services for pets.
Over the past year, Texarkana Animal Services worked with local rescues and communities to spay 70 dogs and 20 cats in the Texarkana and Bowie County area. They plan to continue partnering with these groups to offer these services.
Mashell Daniel, Director of Developmental Services, is excited to see how this funding will continue benefiting the pet community.
We’ve had a fantastic start to our two-year grant and are thrilled to be able to provide these services to our residents,” said Daniel. “Many people don’t have the resources to afford these procedures, so receiving this grant will greatly help in reducing the number of pets entering local shelters.
Spaying and neutering pets offer health and behavior benefits while preventing overpopulation. This helps avoid unwanted litters, which often leads to stray and abandoned animals. Failing to spay or neuter pets can cause local shelters and rescues to overcrowd and bring on higher costs.
Residents in Texarkana needing help with spaying or neutering their pets should first contact Texarkana Animal Services to get a required form. Afterward, they can schedule an appointment with a veterinarian of their choice. The veterinarian will fill out the form and return it to Texarkana Animal Services, which will cover the cost. Priority will be given to residents in the city, with others helped on a first-come, first-served basis.
