Memorial Day – A Time to Remember Our Fallen Heroes
The unofficial kickoff to the summer season kicks off this Memorial holiday weekend. Many Americans will be heading to the lakes, vacation, or the backyard for a good old fashioned BBQ with family and friends. But through all the fun, let's not forget those American soldiers who sacrificed their lives so we can enjoy the liberty and freedom of being an American.
There are a couple of Memorial Day events you may want to take part in on Monday, May, 29. 2017 in Texarkana. The annual "Memorial Day Walk" that begins from the Miller County Courthouse at 11:30AM following a memorial service. Everyone will then walk to the Korean/Vietnam Memorial at 7th and State Line Ave., where the Texarkana Area Chapter #278 of the Vietnam Veterans of America is hosting a Memorial Day service at 11:45AM. Everyone is encouraged to attend.
Let's be clear about Memorial Day and what it represents. Memorial Day is the time to honor those who have died defending our country in the U.S. military. Originally called Decoration Day, it all started in the years following the civil war and was finally officially made into a federal holiday in 1971. Memorial Day is always observed on the last Monday during the month of May.
Like the Lee Greenwood song says, I'm proud to be an American.
So this Memorial Day, say a little prayer, fly your American flag and God Bless the USA.
