The Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division is investigating an officer-involved fatal shooting that occurred on Tuesday, March 24, in Independence County.

Initial Shooting Leaves One Dead, One Injured

According to the Arkansas Police, deputies with the Independence County Sheriff’s Office responded around 3:15 AM Monday, March 23, to a shooting at a residence on Brown Lane in the Bethesda community.

When deputies arrived, they found two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Suspect Located After Multi-Agency Search

Officials identified the suspect as 48-year-old Christopher Lee Johnston of Jonesboro, who is accused of fleeing the scene after the shooting.

A search involving the sheriff’s office, Arkansas Department of Corrections K-9 team, Batesville Police Department, and Arkansas State Police was launched.

On Tuesday, Johnston was located in a wooded area near the original scene. Authorities say the DOC K-9 team confronted him in an adjoining field, where deadly force was used. Johnston was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigation Ongoing

No officers were injured during the incident. Johnston’s body will be sent to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory to determine the cause and manner of death.

Once the investigation is complete, findings will be turned over to the Independence County Prosecuting Attorney, who will determine whether the use of force was consistent with Arkansas law.
