PG vs Gilmer-This Will Be Fun to Watch
Last year was a thriller, as PG beat defending conference champs Gilmer. This year's battle could be just as exciting.
Before we set the match-up, we look at lasts weeks big Hawks win over Pittsburgh.
The Hawks fell behind early to a very talented Pirates team 14-0. The preceded to outscore Pittsburgh 45-6. PG Head Coach Josh Gibson had this to say about the game. "I think we started the game playing a little cautious. We took a timeout and talked about playing together and playing FULL TILT. We needed to be aggressive and play confident. Our kids did a great job responding on offense and defense."
The Hawks completely dominated the second half of play, not giving up a score, pressuring the QB and picked off three passes.
For the second week in a row, the Hawks defense absolutely shut down the opposing teams rushing attack. Pittsburgh managed just 25 yards on the ground, after last week Carthage had under 20 yards rushing.
Coach Gibson had one word for that type of defense, "Remarkable." He also was proud of the offense in racking up 45 points saying, "Three different wide receivers had TD catches and Bruce Garrett and James Wiggins continued to run the ball very well. Our offensive line had dominated the line of scrimmage the past three games."
Now it's back to Gilmer for the second year in a row. Gibson says the Buckeyes started off the year ranked #3 in the state. They, just like PG, played a tough non-district schedule. Coach describes Gilmer as, "A good football team that is well coached. It's hard to go into Gilmer and get a win at their place. It will be a great game."
We asked Gibson what it would take for the Hawks to win there for a second year in a row, he said,"We can't beat ourselves. I think if we don't turn the ball over, don't have missed assignments on defense and don't get penalized a lot, we should be in good shape."
The Hawks seem to be getting well injury wise, Gibson says they currently have no major injuries.
Hopefully you can make the trip to Gilmer on Friday night. It should be an electric atmosphere similar to last years epic battle.
The winner of the this game will not wrap of the district crown and #1 seed, but they sure will have an upper leg on doing so again this year. It's a critically important game.
Hawk Nation show up, be loud, be proud and get that "W."
