Pleasant Grove ISD Responses to Allegations of Unsportsmanlike Conduct at Volleyball Game
Pleasant Grove ISD in Texarkana has responded to the allegations of unsportsmanlike behavior by some spectators during the recent volleyball game against North Lamar High School on Tuesday night, October 29. The district says it takes these claims seriously and aims to ensure a respectful and positive environment at all school events.
According to a press release, there was a joint investigation with North Lamar ISD. This included interviews with students, staff, and officials, as well as a review of video footage. PGISD confirms that a few fans made inappropriate comments and gestures during the game. The Pleasant Grove School District is handling these actions according to its student conduct policies.
One of the serious allegations claimed that North Lamar players were spat on, was investigated and found to be false. The North Lamar coach reported that no players indicated they had been spit on, and video evidence did not support the claim. Instead, witnesses said that the person accused was barking, not spitting.
Three days after the game, PGISD learned that a North Lamar student reported hearing a racist remark. No player, coach, or official reported this during the game, and PGISD found no evidence supporting it. However, PGISD strongly condemns any form of discrimination and urges anyone who witnesses such behavior to report it immediately.
PGISD plans to take extra steps to promote sportsmanship and respect. These include increasing the distance between the student section and team benches, positioning staff closer to the crowd, and reinforcing fan etiquette among students.
PGISD went on to say they appreciate North Lamar ISD’s cooperation in the investigation and the community's patience as they work to create a positive atmosphere for future events.
