Texarkana Police Make Arrest on Toddler With Gunshot Wound Saturday
Texarkana Arkansas Police were called on Saturday, (September 14) around 8:11 AM to come to Wadley Hospital after a 2-year-old child arrived with a gunshot wound to the leg.
The child's mother told police that her 8-year-old child had accidentally shot the younger sibling while handling a firearm at their home in Texarkana, Arkansas.
According to a press release, the mother also stated that she and the injured child were brought to the hospital by her live-in boyfriend, Breydan Ybarra. Ybarra also took the 8-year-old and another 5-year-old to their grandmother’s home in Nash, Texas.
Authorities were able to make contact with the grandmother and the two children, and were able to confirm their identities. The injured child was later transferred by air to Children's Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Texarkana Arkansas Police reached out to Ybarra as he was returning to the residence. Officers briefly checked the home to ensure there were no other victims. A background check on Ybarra revealed that he is a convicted felon.
As a result, he was arrested on charges including Possession of a Firearm by Certain Persons and three counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Minor, all felony offenses. Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators were called in and executed a search warrant on the home and Ybarra's vehicle.
The injured child’s condition is thankfully reported to be stable.
