Texarkana residents can look forward to new sidewalks and a shared-use path next year, thanks to a project awarded by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) in November.

The plan includes a 6-foot-wide concrete sidewalk along Kennedy Lane, connecting SH 93/Summerhill Road to Robison Road, and continuing along Robison Road to FM 559/Richmond Road. Additionally, a 12-foot-wide asphalt shared-use path will extend the Cowhorn Creek Trail from Kennedy Lane to FM 559/Richmond Road.

"This project will expand the sidewalk network and extend the shared-use path, providing safer pedestrian access to schools, work, recreation, and other community destinations," said Katie Martin, TxDOT Atlanta District Director of Transportation Planning and Development.

Funded primarily through the federal Transportation Alternatives program, with additional support from the Safe Routes to Schools program, the project was selected during a competitive statewide call for proposals from cities and counties with populations under 200,000.

THK Construction LLC of Longview secured the contract with a low bid of $1,777,958. Construction is slated to begin in February 2025 and is expected to take approximately 11 months. Completion may be affected by weather or other unforeseen factors.
