Report: Texarkana’s Swanger Sports Complex Will Drive Tourism Growth
The City of Texarkana, Texas, has released an economic impact study showing big returns from the newly renovated Swanger Complex at Spring Lake Park. The $9.4 million project, approved by City Council in March 2024 and funded through the 2023 Bond Fund, is already making Texarkana a destination for youth sports tournaments.
Upgrades to the complex include new baseball fields, bullpens, improved lighting, parking, and updated concession and restroom facilities. City leaders say this investment is about more than sports.
“This is about revitalizing a community space and supporting our economy, and creating a place that brings people together,” said Assistant City Manager/Public Works Director Dustin Henslee.
Key economic impacts include:
- $5.8 million in total economic output
- $3.4 million in direct spending from visitors
- $2.4 million in indirect/induced economic activity
- 49 local jobs supported
- $1.75 million in total employee compensation
- $188,000+ in small business income
- Boost for hospitality, retail, and recreation industries
- $763,000 in tax revenue
Assistant City Secretary Chiquita Burks used IMPLAN software to evaluate the impact of an estimated 30,000 annual visitors.
Upcoming Tournaments Scheduled:
- May 24–25: GameDay Experience – USSSA Baseball
- May 30–31: B.A.T.T. Pre-Allstar Tournament
