Class 5A and 6A schools will push back the start of practices for football to Sept. 7 with games beginning Sept. 24. Fall practice was originally scheduled to start Aug. 3.
The University Interscholastic League announced today, Tuesday (July 21) that Texas will delay the start of the high school 5A-6A football season by a month due to a recent surge of new coronavirus cases, hospitalizations and deaths.
Volleyball, cross country and team tennis were also slated to begin practice in August and those dates have also been altered in Class 5A and 6A:
- Volleyball will begin practice Sept. 7 with games starting Sept. 14.
- Cross country can begin holding meets Sept. 14.
- Team tennis can start matches Sept. 14.
Smaller school districts, 1A-4A will keep their original schedule in all fall sports.
Some school districts are already adjusting their calendars to reflect a delayed start for the academic year, or to begin the year with several weeks of online learning. At this rate, the UIL anticipates that not all schools will begin school at the same time.
